Historic places
The Perigord region is steeped in history dating back to the discovery of Cro-Magnon man. There are many prehistoric caves (grotes) open to the public. The famous Lascaux cave is just 11km from us. Le Thot, Grotte de Tourtoirac, Grotte du Grand Roc, dwelling villages like Le Roque Saint Christophe or La Madeleleine, old abbeys like Saint Amand de Coly. All these are within easy short drive.
Chateaux and gardens
There are many chateaux, most of them come with splendid gardens – Hautefort for example, Chateau de Losse, Chateau de Sauveboeuf, Chateau de Castelnaud and Chateau des Milandes once the home of the famous Josephine Baker. There are also many museums, theme parks, animal farms and gardens such as Les Jardins de l’immaginaire or Les Jardins du Manoir d’Eyrignac, lots to keep your days busy if you so choose.
Villages and towns
You can enjoy visiting the villages and towns themselves with their beautiful ancient and sometimes medieval architecture, Sarlat is a fine example. Also, within a short drive, are Montignac, Terrasson or Saint Leon sur Vezere. A little further is the central market town of Perigueux with cute little streets and shops in the old part of town.
Sport activities
From sport activities the most known is probably canoeing and boat trips, but there are also horse riding, biking, hiking, fishing, golf, paintball, tennis and many others.
Gastronomy
Perigord is renowned for its duck and goose specialties, the black truffle, boletus mushrooms, walnuts, strawberries,…
We are a 90 minute drive from Bordeaux, whose surrounding area is internationally famous for its exquisite wines – Margaux , Pauillac, Medoc, to name but a few. Other world renowned wines, St Emillion, Bergerac, Sauternes and many others are a little closer.
All villages and towns have their weekly market and many of them also have their summer evening markets with facility to eat purchased local foods at the place and dance afterwards. In summer there are food festivals and music festivals.
Shopping
If you are in need of a bit of retail therapy, don’t panic, we may be blessed with many little old world towns with their old world charms but there are also plenty of well stocked larger stores and retail parks all within a short drive..
